Antonio Guterres has been elected as the U.N. Secretary General for a second term. Antonio Guterres assumed the office on 1st January 2017. His first term will end on December 31st 2021.
Antonio Guterres will begin his second term as the Secretary General on 1st January, 2022. Mr. Guterres’ name was unanimously recommended to the 193-member body for re-election.
On June 8, the 15-nation Council had held a closed meeting where it adopted by acclamation the resolution that recommended Mr. Guterres’ name to the General Assembly for a second five-year term as Secretary General.
Volkan Bozkir, President of the UN General Assembly of the 75th session administered the oath of office to 72-year-old Guterres at the podium of the UN General Assembly hall.
