Money or No Money? What helps a state in transition?

On 8th September, a meeting was held between the Chinese foreign minister and representatives of Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

In the meeting China announced that it will provide 3 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Afghanistan, along with an emergency humanitarian aid worth 200 million yuan ($31 million) including food, medicines and other materials for winter.

The Taliban announced an acting government on 10th September 2021, that is one day before 11 September, a day which allowed the U.S. to invade Afghanistan in 2001.

During its installation of foreign ministers, the Taliban had also invited China, Russia, Iran Turkey and Pakistan, on 10th September.

What are the immediate options of a country involved in the construction of this environment?

One, to follow the situation for a few more months while risking, a million Afghani lives, which may take back Afghanistan by decades.

The second initiative is to send enough money to support the humanitarian aid through the right channels, while not recognising the regime in power.

According to the World Bank and the UN, assets worth $10 Billion of the Taliban regime are frozen overseas.

The Chinese are also not sure whether the “New Taliban” would allow them peaceful progress of the BRI project or not. Taliban’s stand on the ETIM movement is also unclear at the moment.

Pakistan the winner.

The recent turn of events in West Asia has made Pakistan the immediate winner. In the last few years, Pakistan has also made progress in slowing TTP activities.

The relationship of counties with the new Taliban regime is pre-determined, Pakistan would want to maintain a strategic relationship while India a diplomatic. China and Russia would want to work the new regime for commercial purposes.

  1. It will be interesting, indeed. An oft-quoted Chinese curse (but not really) says, “May you live in interesting times.” Well, we are there. Thanx for this newsy update, my friend. c.a.
