
The person who writes a column is called a “columnist”. It can be daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, bimonthly (some prefer it to write annually or biannually as well).
Columns are published with a byline. It is written using “first person singular” or “third person singular”.
Writing a column.

• Structure – Grab back events that occurred some time ago.
• Style of writing – Develop a style when you have a command over humour. It allows a very complex message to be conveyed in a lighter manner.
• Personalise your thoughts.
• Be creative – Experiment with words, images, videos, be descriptive. Sharpen your vocabulary. “Write for others”.

Reporting in-depth/feature column

– It is dealing with background perspectives and issues related to the story in past and present.
I think / opinionated column

– Experienced columnists and self proclaimed columnists write these…
Gossip columns

– Practically everyone loves juicy gossip. It may not be the writer’s exclusive domain. Sensational aspect.
Humorous column

– Finding humorous aspects of life.
Food column

– What is the best eat of the town? Where is it served? Which restaurant has the best vibes? Be an explorer!
Advice column

– Question/answers structure pattern. Typically a reader/user writes to the media organisation.
Music column

– What are the recent chartbusters? What’s the story behind the story? Who is the singer?
Fashion column

– What’s trending in fashion? Fashion is a form of self-expression, at a particular period and place and in a specific context so make it more about you.
Sports column

– Writing columns on matters pertaining to sporting topics and competition.
Print and Online media heavily relies on columns. When a celebrated columnist is associated with a news organisation, the engagement is bound to rise!
