PM Modi addresses India’s first virtual UNSC debate.

In his speech PM Modi successfully addressed the issue of Maritime Conservation directly and also the issue “Maritime Border Conservation of India and her allies indirectly.

Note - These are the excerpts from the speech.

“Oceans are being used for piracy and terrorism. Climate change and natural disasters are linked to the maritime domain. Every country has a rich maritime heritage and to protect that we must create a framework, which can only be made possible by cooperation from all.”

These are the 5 principles for a healthy marine life laid out by the PM.

  • We must remove barriers from maritime trade for the prosperity of all.
  • Maritime disputes should be settled in a peaceful manner by following international laws. This is necessary to maintain world peace and stability.
  • We should combat climate change and non-state actors collectively. India’s white shipping information fusion centre is increasing in the collective maritime domain. India’s role in the Indian Ocean is of a pioneer of development.
  • We need to preserve the maritime environment and maritime resources. We need to collectively combat plastic pandemic in the ocean, oil spillage, overfishing, marine poaching. We need to promote the study of Ocean Science.
  • We should give importance to responsible maritime connectivity. It is clear that maritime trade needs infrastructure but we need to keep in mind the fiscal sustainability and absorption capacity of many countries while doing so.

For this, Maritime Security Cooperation can become the organisation to take forward these agendas.” Said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
